Your Countdown to Christmas Day

14 December 2016

We love Christmas, especially as it combines two of our favourite things....eating and organising!
For flap-free Christmas entertaining it's always good to start with a plan - even if you don't necessarily stick to it! Here we have the ultimate Christmas countdown plan to get you started.

3 Weeks before Christmas day

  • Plan your menu - start thinking about what you might want to serve on the day
  • Make sure you have enough seats/ table space/ cutlery/ glasses etc for all your guests
  • Think about what size turkey you need and order your turkey and other special festive food for the day
  • Start buying non-perishables such as crisps/ nuts/ chocolates etc
  • Start baking anything you can freeze such as sausage rolls and mince pies
  • Organise, borrow or buy any party games and entertainment for the big day

The week before Christmas Day

  • Give your house a good deep clean so you’re not cleaning on Xmas eve
  • Plan your trip to the supermarket for your fresh produce – make a list and add to it when you need to
  • Clear out your fridge to make space for festive food – make sure you eat up anything that uses up valuable space in the week before
  • Buy lots of batteries! – no one wants a disappointed child on Christmas morning!

2/3 Days before Christmas Day

  • Shop for your fresh ingredients - vegetables usually last a few days so buy them now
  • Pick up your turkey - if you've ordered your bird you'll probably have a time slot allocated
  • If you have a frozen turkey, see when you need to start the defrosting process

Christmas Eve

  • Lay the table - it's one less job to do on the day
  • Prepare your vegetables/ par boil and rough-up your potatoes ready for roasting
  • Cook your buffet meats

Christmas Day Lunch

  • Pre-heat oven to required temperature
  • Cover your turkey with foil
  • Put roast potatoes/ parsnips in the oven
  • Get pigs in blankets in the oven
  • Remove foil for the last 30 minutes of cooking
  • Remove turkey from the oven and leave to rest for 30 minutes
  • Use the turkey juices to start making the gravy
  • Put the vegetables on
  • Remove potatoes and parsnips from oven
  • Check everything is ready
  • Plate up and serve to the table

  • Sit down, relax and enjoy!
(ps. Let someone else volunteer to do the washing up!)
